Solana Transaction Fee Explained

A Solana transaction fee has two components: a mandatory base fee and an optional priority fee. Understanding both is essential for developers and traders who want predictable costs and reliable transaction landing.

Total Transaction Fee Formula

The total transaction fee = base fee + priority fee. The base fee equals 5,000 lamports × number of signatures. The priority fee equals ceil(compute_unit_price × compute_unit_limit / 1,000,000) lamports. For a simple SOL transfer with one signature and no priority fee, the total cost is exactly 5,000 lamports.

Fee Distribution

Base fee: 50% burned, 50% to the block-producing validator. Priority fee: 100% to the validator (none burned). This asymmetric distribution was introduced by SIMD-0096 to incentivize validators to prioritize higher-paying transactions.

Average Transaction Costs

A simple SOL transfer costs 5,000 lamports (< $0.001). A token swap on Jupiter or Raydium typically costs 10,000–50,000 lamports including compute fees. NFT minting ranges from 20,000 to 100,000+ lamports depending on program complexity. Even complex DeFi interactions usually remain well under one cent.

Fees Are Charged Upfront

The total fee is deducted from the fee payer's account before execution begins. If the account does not have sufficient SOL to cover the fee, the transaction is rejected immediately without consuming any network resources.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much is a Solana transaction fee?

A basic Solana transaction costs 5,000 lamports (0.000005 SOL). With priority fees included, average total costs in 2025 range from $0.0004 to $0.013 per transaction.

Why did my Solana transaction fail but still cost fees?

Validators verify signatures and process transactions regardless of whether they succeed. The base fee compensates this work, so it is non-refundable even on failed transactions.

Can I pay Solana fees in tokens other than SOL?

No. All Solana transaction fees must be paid in SOL. There is no alternative fee token at the protocol level.
